Samaritans of Singapore is organising its inaugural bi-annual Symposium from 9 to 11 September 2021 in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September. The theme of the symposium is "Transitions: Harnessing Strength Amidst Uncertainties".
Suicide ideation may occur to individuals at various junctures of their life, especially so during difficult transitional periods. With this theme in mind, this Symposium will gather more than 30 overseas and local industry leaders to share knowledge about the impact of life transitions on people of various backgrounds. This Symposium also aims to align strategic efforts toward suicide prevention on a local and community level and encourage discussions on how to build resilience in times of crisis/transitions.
The COVID-19 global pandemic is a timely reminder that post crisis recovery and transitions is critical, and past data have showed that the number of suicide deaths tend to increase after a crisis. Topics and discussions around suicide prevention and mental health is therefore of paramount importance right now.
While it will be ideal that we meet you in person this year. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Symposium will unfortunately have to take place virtually. Expect a mix of plenary talks, panel discussions and 4 breakout tracks - Community, Elderly, Family and Youth in the 2.5-day virtual event.
Suicide is a serious public health concern that cuts across the lifespan and different cultures, but it remains a sensitive and taboo topic in many parts of the world, including Singapore. With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the current situation demands more conversations around the topic of suicide and the actions and resources towards suicide prevention work.
Join us in our inaugural bi-annual Symposium this September! Registration opens on 1st May 2021. Early bird discounts are available till 31st May 2021.
